centrifuge fanci machinery the centrifugal fan, often called a "squirrel cage" (due to its general resemblance to exercise wheels for pet rodents) or a "scroll fan," has a movable component consisting of a central shaft around which a dam is placed. positioning of blades forming a spiral or rib. centrifugal fans blow air at right angles to the fan inlet and rotate the air towards the outlet. the impeller rotates causing air to enter the fan from the side of the shaft and travel perpendicularly from the shaft to the opening in the helical fan housing. centrifugal fan produces more pressure for a given air volume and is used where this is desired. leaf blowers, blowdryers, inflatable bed inflators, inflatable structures, air control in air handling units and various industrial purposes. typically, they are noisier than comparable axial fans. cross flow fan machine the cross-flow or tangential fan, sometimes known as a tubular fan, was patented in 1893 by paul mortier [16] and is widely used in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and ductless split air conditioners, especially (hvac). the fan is usually long relative to the diameter, so the flow remains approximately two-dimensional from the ends. the cross flow fan uses a forward curved blade impeller housed in a housing consisting of a rear wall and a swirl wall. unlike radial machines, the main flow passes twice through the vane and moves transversely along the impeller. flow in a cross-flow fan can be divided into three distinct regions: an eddy region close to the fan discharge, called an eccentric vortex, a flow region and a directly opposite paddle region. both the eddy and rowing zones consume energy and as a result only a portion of the impeller provides usable work on the flow. the cross-flow fan or transverse fan is therefore a two-stage partial acceptance machine.
the popularity of the cross flow fan in hvac comes from its compactness, shape, quiet operation and ability to provide a high pressure coefficient. an effectively rectangular fan in terms of inlet and outlet geometry, the diameter is easily scaled to suit the available space and the length can be adjusted to meet the flow rate requirements for the particular application.
