the dust collection system or dust filter is the air cleaning part of the dust collection system. there is no standard dust collection filter. ın essence, the blower draws air from its location into the filter, which removes particles from the air. the ratio of air to fabric is the amount of air that passes through one square foot of the filter. the lower the ratio, the higher the efficiency of the filtration systems.
as might be expected, the filtration system for a dust collection system can fill and become clogged as particles accumulate on the filter surface. there are several methods used to clean the filters, some of which involve shutting down the system. for systems that need to be in continuous operation, this is not an option and alternative methods should be used during operation.

the optional system has a controller with a pressure sensor to monitor the static difference in the filter. while the system measures the pressure on the filter, when the levels are too high, it sends a signal to a diaphragm valve to supply compressed air to the filter to remove any accumulated particles. this is called a pulsed jet bag or pulsed jet dust collector and is the most common form of particulate air pollution control equipment. other systems generate an alarm to notify operators that a significantly high pressure has been reached. most systems, optional or not, have controllers that notify operators of a pickup error or pressure drop across the filter.

after particulate matter passes through the system and is removed from the filter, it falls into a container or hopper for collection. the design of the container depends on the type of material being filtered and the loading speed. the main types of mechanisms are:

• closed box – collected material is discharged into a hopper.
• drum or bag - a mechanism that requires the replacement of the drum or bag that collects the substance.
• rotary valve - similar to a drum or bag, substance flows through a valve into a drum or bag.
• screw conveyor – a conveyor system that transports material to a storage or disposal location.
although filtration systems are a popular form of dust collection, there are systems that do not use filters. one of these is an electrostatic precipitator, which uses the force of electrostatic energy to remove particles from the air and has discharge wires and collection plates.
