If you are considering using a carbon filter for smoke, what does this mean for you? It's best to get one with a high carbon content to allow a greater surface area for the gases to adhere to, as it needs to be changed based on saturation levels.

But that may not necessarily make them better for smoke. The EPA states that when filters are arranged in a series, their effectiveness can be reduced because they can create more air resistance. This can reduce the supply of fresh air to the room or even cause some of the room air to completely miss the filter. Reduced air distribution means that the device may not be able to produce enough fresh air to circulate in the room, and if the air bypasses the filter, contaminated air may flow through the unit and not be filtered at all.
